Background of the Study
Virtual Reality (VR) technology has emerged as a transformative tool in educational and training environments, particularly in healthcare. In Abuja, FCT, the design of a VR-based learning system for basic first aid training represents an innovative approach aimed at improving emergency response skills. Traditional first aid training, which often relies on classroom instruction and static demonstrations, may not provide the immersive, hands-on experience necessary to prepare individuals for real-life emergencies (Garcia, 2023). The integration of VR enables the creation of realistic simulations where learners can practice essential first aid procedures in a risk-free environment, thereby enhancing skill retention and confidence. The proposed system simulates various emergency scenarios, including CPR, wound management, and accident response, allowing users to engage in repetitive, scenario-based training. This method bridges the gap between theory and practice by offering immersive experiences that mimic real-life emergencies (Omondi, 2024).
By using VR, trainees are able to practice in a controlled yet realistic environment, receiving immediate feedback on their performance. This interactive and iterative approach not only improves the quality of training but also fosters critical decision-making skills under pressure. Given Abuja’s high emergency response demands, such innovative training tools are essential for improving public health outcomes. The VR-based system is designed to be both scalable and adaptable, accommodating users with varying levels of prior first aid knowledge. Moreover, the system’s ability to simulate diverse emergency scenarios provides learners with comprehensive exposure, thus enhancing their preparedness and response capabilities (Ibrahim, 2025). This study will investigate the design, development, and implementation of the VR-based learning system, evaluating its effectiveness in improving first aid skills and reducing response times during emergencies.
Statement of the Problem
Current first aid training methods in Abuja, FCT, rely heavily on traditional, classroom-based instruction and live demonstrations, which often fall short in engaging learners and providing practical experience. These conventional approaches rarely simulate the unpredictable nature of real emergencies, leaving participants underprepared for critical situations. The gap between theoretical instruction and the practical application of first aid procedures is a significant concern, as inadequate training can lead to delayed or improper responses during emergencies (Chukwu, 2023). Additionally, logistical constraints such as limited training facilities, high costs of live simulations, and variability in instructional quality further undermine the effectiveness of traditional training.
The lack of immersive, hands-on training opportunities means that many individuals do not acquire the confidence or skills necessary to act decisively when confronted with real emergencies. Although Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promising alternative by providing a realistic and safe environment for practice, its adoption has been limited by factors such as high development costs, technological barriers, and concerns regarding user acceptance (Mensah, 2024). There is also a dearth of empirical research on the long-term impact of VR-based training on skill retention and emergency response efficiency. This study aims to address these issues by developing and evaluating a VR-based learning system tailored for basic first aid training in Abuja. The research will assess whether the immersive nature of VR can bridge the existing gap between theory and practice, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of first aid training and contributing to better emergency outcomes.
Objectives of the Study:
To design a Virtual Reality-based system for basic first aid training.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the VR training system in improving first aid skills.
To assess user satisfaction and learning outcomes associated with the VR-based training.
Research Questions:
How does a VR-based learning system improve the acquisition of basic first aid skills compared to traditional methods?
What is the impact of VR training on user confidence and response times during simulated emergencies?
What challenges and opportunities are encountered during the implementation of VR-based first aid training in Abuja?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the potential of VR technology to revolutionize first aid training in Abuja, FCT. By providing immersive, hands-on simulations, the system aims to enhance emergency response skills and reduce critical response times, ultimately contributing to improved public health outcomes. The research findings will offer valuable insights for healthcare educators and policymakers on integrating VR into training programs (Adetokunbo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of a Virtual Reality-based learning system for basic first aid training in Abuja, FCT. It focuses exclusively on first aid training scenarios.
